Costs for extractions of samples and data - MDC and MPP

Initially, MDC was financed by the Cancer Foundation and MPP by the healthcare system in Malmö. Until 2005, we were able to provide samples and data extractions free of charge. Today, however, our operations must be revenue-financed.

Our biggest expense is personnel costs. We have a full-time data manager and a full-time project coordinator. In case of large extractions, we also have to take help from externally employed BMA. Our other major expense is the operation of the freezers (including the purchase of new freezers, service and maintenance), which hold approximately half a million samples for MDC alone. In addition, there are costs for DNA extraction, REMPing of samples, rent of premises, purchase of computers and more.

Within the project, we have made a calculation of what the maintenance of the biobank and database costs, and distributed this over the number of extractions we expect per year.

Costs for extraction of samples and data

CategoryCost*
Entry fee, new application25 000 SEK
Entry fee, supplementary application5 000 SEK
Biological sample, DNA10 SEK/sample + cost Biobank unit 47 (BD47)
Biological sample, other samples100 SEK/sample + cost Biobank unit 47 (BD47)
Data (billable hours. data manager)1 500 SEK/hour

*Only one entry fee is charged for MPP-MDC parallel applications. Applications concerning validation of data via medical records are not charged, however, a requirement is that results from validation be transferred to the MPP/MDC databases. For sample selection carried out by our own staff, no sample cost is charged, however any working time for the data manager in connection with the selection is charged. Lund University's overhead cost (23.5%) is added.
